Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine - ACT-HIB
Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccine - ACT-HIB
Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB) is a bacterium that can cause serious invasive infections, especially in young children. Contrary to its name, Haemophilus influenzae type b does not cause influenza.
This infection is more common in children under 5 years old, and older children are at lower risk. Symptoms of meningitis are most common in invasive infections, and bacteria that enter the bloodstream often appear at the same time. The infection can also affect various parts of the body, such as the lungs, epiglottis (upper part of the throat), joints, and bones. Meningitis can cause fever, headache, neck stiffness, and symptoms such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, photophobia, confusion, and drowsiness. Patients with epiglottitis may experience symptoms such as fever, sore throat, drooling, pain when swallowing, refusal to swallow, and even difficulty breathing.
HIB is spread through coughing, sneezing or close face-to-face contact. It can also be spread through saliva or phlegm when kissing or sharing items such as food, utensils or drinks. Babies and children can also get sick if they share pacifiers, bottles or toys with other children.
