Hepatitis A is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. Symptoms are more common in adults than in children, and the disease is more severe in older people. It may take weeks or months for patients to recover.
Hepatitis A infection does not cause chronic liver disease and is rarely fatal, but it can cause debilitating symptoms and fulminant hepatitis (acute liver failure) with a high mortality rate.
