Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine – IMOJEV
Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine – IMOJEV
Japanese encephalitis is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It is mainly contracted by bites of Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex annuum or Culex quinquefasciatus, which carry Japanese encephalitis virus.
There is currently no specific treatment for Japanese encephalitis, and doctors generally provide supportive care to patients. According to the World Health Organization, the mortality rate from meningitis in Japan can be as high as 20-30%. About 30-50% of survivors of Japanese encephalitis have neurological sequelae. Infants and children are particularly high-risk groups. About 75% of infected people are children from birth to 14 years old.
If you plan to travel to high-risk areas during the disease transmission season, or if you travel to rural areas and spend most of your time outdoors or at night, vaccination is highly recommended.
