ACWY meningococcal vaccine-MENQUADFI/NIMENRIX

ACWY meningococcal vaccine-MENQUADFI/NIMENRIX

Meningococci mainly include A, B, C, W, X and Y, among which type B meningococci account for 63.2%. People under the age of two are at the peak of meningococcal infections, so prepare in advance to be extra assured, and don’t neglect vaccination!

Neisseria meningitidis is mainly spread through droplets or respiratory secretions of patients. Once infected, it can invade the blood or the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord, forming meningitis. The initial symptoms are similar to those of a cold, with fever being the main symptom. There may also be symptoms such as headache, vomiting, stiff neck or muscle aches, and sometimes a red or purple rash. Once meningococci enter the blood, the condition can worsen rapidly and lead to death within 24 hours.

Meningococci are not included in the childhood vaccine schedule. Outbreaks have occurred from time to time in various parts of Europe, America, Australia, and China. It is recommended that if young children or relatives and friends living at home need to travel frequently to other places, they may consider vaccination with meningococcal vaccine for protection.

In recent years, 50% of meningococcal cases in Hong Kong are caused by type B , while the rest are caused by types A, C, W, Y and X.
