Meningococcal B Vaccine (MenB)

Meningococcal serogroups mainly include A, B, C, W, X, and Y, with serogroup B accounting for 63.2% of cases. Children under two years old are at the peak of meningococcal infection, so early preparation provides extra peace of mind. Do not neglect vaccination!

Meningococcal bacteria are mainly transmitted through droplets or respiratory secretions from infected individuals. Once infected, they can invade the bloodstream or the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, leading to meningitis. Early symptoms are similar to those of a common cold, primarily fever, but may also include headache, vomiting, stiff neck, or muscle aches. Sometimes, a red or purple rash may also appear. Once meningococcal bacteria enter the bloodstream, the condition can rapidly worsen and be fatal within 24 hours.

Meningococcal vaccination is not included in the childhood immunization program. Outbreaks occur in Europe, America, Australia, and various parts of China. It is recommended that if young children or cohabiting relatives in your household frequently travel abroad, you consider meningococcal vaccination for protection.

In recent years, meningococcal serogroup B accounted for 50% of cases in Hong Kong, with the remaining cases caused by serogroups A, C, W, Y, and X.

Meningococcal B vaccine:

GSK

2 to 5 months old: three doses
First dose: 2 months old or older
Second dose: at least 2 months after the first dose
Third dose: at 1 year old and at least 6 months after the second dose

6 to 11 months old: three doses
First dose: 6 months old or older
Second dose: at least 2 months after the first dose
Third dose: at 1 year old and at least 2 months after the second dose

24 months old or older: only two doses, at least 1 month apart
